“The First Shall Be Last”

 Sunday Sermon Wrap Up

It is human nature to constantly strive to be first. Whether it is first in line, first to eat, number one at work and so on. Just like climbing a ladder, our pride pushes us to climb to the very top. Once we reach that point we often feel empty as we look down upon the carnage that is the people we have stepped on and knocked over to get where we are.

Lets Review – Mark 9:33-37

33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant to all.”
36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Jesus takes a seat and speaks to his disciples who perk up to listen. The reason behind this is that during this time, if a rabbi or a teacher took a seat, those listening were prepared for a very important message. “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last..” What does this message mean? True Greatness is equivalent to the amount of our humility. Jesus takes the child into his arms to show his disciples how we must love and serve. During this time, children were not viewed as equal and were looked upon as a lower class; therefore by welcoming the child into his arms he is inviting his followers to invite the less fortunate into theirs.

We must put others before ourselves in order to be first in God’s eyes. Do not let this discourage you and think that you must be the doormat to the world. Confidence and courage are important characteristics to humility. Arrogance is the opposite.

Let’s Review – Mark 10:31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

31

We may strive to be number one in all aspects of our lives, but when the time comes will you be judged as “first” in line into the gates of Heaven?

Let’s Review – Mark 10:45

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

We were not put on this Earth to be served by others around us. We were placed on this Earth for a purpose, a purpose that may only be known to God, but an important one none the less. It is our duty to let God live through us and fulfill his plan.

In an effort to be “last”:
1. Choose contentment over compassion.
Congratulate those around us for their achievements and accomplishments. Spend time acknowledging your successes rather than dwelling on the successes of others. Celebrate with those around you and encourage them to do well.
2. Choose others instead of me.
3. Choose God’s glory over my glory.
Upon Mother Teresa’s passing she gave all of her life’s work and accomplishments up to the glory of God. She knew that although she was using humility to help those in need, it was God who allowed her to accomplish so much and it was He who was using her to fulfill his will. Are you helping to fulfill God’s purpose through you?
4. Choose God’s reward over Man’s recognition.
Ask yourself is it worth jeopardizing my eternal life? God’s gift of everlasting life it worth more to me than anything else that this world can offer. There are only two things in life that do not have an expiration date: People and Jesus Christ!

So we must stop and ask, in light of eternity, what should we be pursuing and giving our life to?

A pastor is substituting for a 3rd grade Sunday school class and asks the class a simple question, “What do you think Jesus is like?”  He expected a few answers, “He was a good man” or “He was the son of God” but one little boy raised his hand and said “I think he is like our Sunday school teacher.”

That is how we should live our lives. We should be so humble that people are able to see Jesus in us and through us. Let us be his hands and feet.

Twilight Saga: New Moon Trailer

Twilight Saga Fanboyism – Yes, I’m hooked.

newmoonofficFirst Off, I would just like to take the opportunity to thank and congratulate Stephenie Meyer on creating such a fantastic collection of novels and such a fantastic franchise. I’ve can not recall any time I’ve become so hooked on a set of books.

Nicholas and I were a few of the thousands, if not millions of people who attended the midnight premiere of  New Moon on Thursday night. We had purchased our tickets some two months earlier and I could not wait to see it! We arrived a few hours early and not to my surprise the theaters were already packed with screaming woman. I was decked out in my fanboy attire —–> ocd

The books (as usual) are so much better than the movies, but I love to watch the fantastic story play out on the big screen. Eclipse comes out on June 30th (or so I’ve heard) and I’m ready to go buy tickets now!

New Moon was just as I had expected, an exciting and much better follow up to Twilight. Taylor Lautner was fantastic as the new buff Jacob Black, and I am so happy to see that in the end it worked out for him. I would have hated for him to be re-casted.

Robert Pattinson (omg, yum!), although he was not the main focus in this film, was drop dead gorgeous as usual and made my heart beat out of my chest; his quotes of his undying love circa the early 1900s make me swoon every time. Kristen Stewart is my perfect Bella Swan and she was fantastic.

Nicholas may not admit it in public, but he knows deep down he enjoyed the movie just as much as I did. At the end he even said and I quote “I want to see the other ones now because I want to see what happens to that werewolf guy, does he ever get laid?”. LOL.

Team Edward FTW!!!

V : Pilot Episode on ABC

I watch very few television shows religiously. Sundays are “Animation Station” night with The Cleveland Show, Family Guy and American Dad. On Mondays, I have my Big Bang Theory ,How I Met Your Mother, Accidentally On Purpose, House, Trauma and CSI Miami. On Wednesday nights I have to watch Criminal Minds, Mercy and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Other than that, I’ll pretty much watch whatever is on. I’m also really OCD about having to be up to date on my tv shows. I started watch Flash Forward and I missed the second episode. I had it DVR-d but by the time I had a moment to watch it, the third episode had already come and went. I really hate that.

V{ABC.COM}

So with that being said, ABC had a new pilot on tonight that I was hoping would fill my Tuesday void. “V” is a sci-fi show about an alien race, that appears human, visiting Earth and offering “peace”. In exchange for the use of Earth’s resources, the aliens say that they will offer cures to 60+ medical conditions and new technologies. Similar to Lost, it is a bunch of mini stories wrapped into one big story. There is a reporter who is willing to say anything the aliens tell him to on national television to further his career, an FBI agent who dwells on her husband recently leaving and her distant from her son, the son who has abandonment issues due to his father leaving, an “alien” guy who is struggling over his past and his future ( he is getting engaged), a priest questioning the visitors reasons for being brought to Earth, etc. At the end of the pilot you learn that the visitors have inhabited the planet for quite some time with other motives than peace, that the visitors are really reptile aliens dressed as humans, there is a resistance against the aliens, and that some of the main characters of the show are actual reptile alien “traitors”. Its kind of confusing and definitely weird.

All in all I was really disappointed in this “pilot” episode for V. I feel like there is so much more they could have put into this episode and saved a lot of the not as exciting plot twists for later in the season. I’m willing to give it a second try and watch next week’s episode but if that episode doesn’t catch my interest then I’m gonna need to watch for other new premieres.

Anyone have any good Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday filler shows?

Love others as you love yourself“. I heard that on the radio today. I try my best to be a good person and help those in need when I can,  but I definitely could use some improvement.

So I’ve decided..

I want to help people do something in their life. I can rake a few yards or help handout food (which I’m hoping to do this Turkey day)..I just want to be a part of something positive..something life changing to someone that could really use my help and effort.

I jumped onto VolunteerMatch.com hoping to find some fantastic opportunity. I came across a few hospice care facilities looking for people to spend some time and offer companionship to some older folks (Who wouldn’t love having extra grandparents?!), local disaster relief with the American Red Cross, Food Bank help, etc. I am more than happy to get involved with these groups, but I am especially interested in groups that are benefiting children specifically or animals.

I just really want to help out! Any ideas?
