Dear Daddy

June 3rd, 1966 – February 28th, 2010
This is the third or so time I’ve tried to begin this post. I’m at a loss for words and I’m not sure exactly what it is that I want to say. I’m still in a bit of shock. Although my father has been battling cancer for most of my life, it still doesn’t make it any easier to deal with the fact that he is now gone. His health had seriously deteriorated over the past year or so and I am so thankful that I was able to see him one last time before he passed.
Dear Daddy,
I just want you to know that I love you so much. You were a fantastic father even if I didn’t show it all of the time. I wish I had spent more time with you and told you how much you meant to me and how thankful I was for you. So many memories come to mind and my eyes are filled with tears. I am happy that you are no longer in any pain but at the same time I am so sad that you are gone. I’m going to do the best that I can to be strong for everyone and help them cope.
We all miss you so much already. You will never be forgotten. You will live on forever in our hearts and minds. I can’t wait till I get to see you again on the other side. Please give hugs and kisses to Andrew and Poppy for me.
Rest in peace knowing that I will always be thinking of you and how much we all love you.
I will forever and always be your little girl.

Facebook, Did you take your meds today?

I have been having issues with Facebook all day long. First, the search section wasn’t working and you couldn’t find any friends to add. Then I couldn’t get any photos to load without locking up the whole site. THEN, the icing on the cake..
Facebook managed to kill Nicholas!!
yeah, you read that right. Facebook among all of its wild and crazy antics today managed to mark his profile as a ‘Memorial Page’ and now he can’t log into his account. So we sat around searching for some contact information for Facebook. It’s really hard to find. I searched through the ‘help center’ and @replied the Facebook account in hopes someone would contact us back. I googled around a bit and came across this: http://bit.ly/9IdXlR which helped a bit; offering the methods to contact them. I haven’t heard anything yet (go figure!). Today has been a ridiculous day in the world of Facebook users. I hope Nicholas comes back to life soon!

Quick! Look in your purse right now and tell me how many tubes of chap stick or lip gloss you have sitting in there. 1? 2? 4? I currently have 3 which proves my point: Women have a fetish for flavored lip balm! Here are a few brands out right now that I’m absolutely in love with.
Burt’s Bees – Everyone loves the minty scent and menthol tingle that it leaves on your lips. My favorites include the original and the shimmer with just a hint of color and flavor. Burt’s Bee’s offers a whole line of other products that are worth giving a try as well. [ I love the deep conditioners! ] You can purchase Burt’s Bee’s products at most major retailers, i.e. Target, Walmart, Drugstores, etc.
Yankee Candle – I got a mini set of these in my Christmas stocking and now I can’t get enough! Yankee Candle’s
brand of chap stick are shaped like little candle jars (so cute!) and they smell just like the candles they represent. French vanilla, Strawberry, Christmas Cookie and Lime were the few that came in my pack and each one is just as delicious as the next! I can’t wait to go buy a few new flavors. You can purchase Yankee Candle product’s at, you guessed it!, Yankee Candle.
Vitamin Water - This is my newest find and its a great one! Glaceau, the creators of Vitamin Water, have dedicated a chap stick line to their water. The chap sticks have the same names and flavors as the waters themselves, which is always a nice surprise. XXX is my favorite flavor as it is a blend of berries and pomegranate. I will use this stick the fastest out of them all I think; I just love the soft moist texture of this gloss. I was able to find my chap stick at Walgreens. This leads me to believe that you should also be able to find them in Walmart, CVS, Target and other major retailers.
Crazy Find: Bob Bell Pass Trail, Myrtle Beach SC
Feb 11th
While Duckie and I were on our weekly ride on the boulevard looking at the pretty beach houses, Duckie mentioned that she had found this weird trail off a back road in Carolina Forest. The trail itself was marked by a metal sign claiming that it ran all the way to Canada over the course of a few thousand miles. According to what Duckie had heard, the trail just stops in a field. I was intrigued by this idea and so I had Duckie take me to the spot.
Here are directions to this sign:
From Carolina Forest @ 501 >
Follow Carolina Forest Boulevard all the way to River Oaks Drive.
Take a right once you’ve reached the stoplight at Forest Crossings (or whatever they may be calling that section).
Take your first left, immediately following the overpass (next to The Battery).
Drive straight down this road ( I don’t know what it is called) for about a quarter of a mile and the sign will be on the left hand side of the road. Blue sign, yellow font next to a paved path.
We found the sign with ease. The sign stated that it was indeed a trail that led all the way to Canada. The “Bob Bell Pass Trail” as this section was called connected Key West to Canada with 3,000+ miles of walking trail known as The East Coast Greenway. We had never heard of it before and if it is as big as this sign claims it is, I”m surprised we haven’t. Not to mention, its location is so random and hidden away from everything. Maybe they are still in the process of building it; I don’t know how it gets around Hwy 31.
What is The East Coast Greenway? “The East Coast Greenway is a developing trail system, spanning nearly 3,000 miles as it winds its way between Canada and Key West, linking all the major cities of the eastern seaboard. Nearly 25 percent of the route is already on safe, traffic-free paths.” From what I can tell, the project is currently still undergoing construction and is a non profit organization. Donations are appreciated.
Check out info on the greenway here. Enjoy a piece of it here in Myrtle Beach!! Has anyone been to this location?

I ran across an article this morning that I thought was very bizarre. Thanks to a RT on Twitter from @AlysonNoel, I stumbled across an article this morning about how girls in Thailand are paying big bucks to have braces. Apparently, decorating your teeth with little colored pieces of plastic and rubber bands is COOL. On top of that braces are very expensive so some girls in desperate need of colorful teeth go to the middle of flea markets where people will just apply a set for them; mind you these people are not trained professionals! Due to the haphazard ways in which the braces are applied and the dirty conditions, its no wonder that two girls have already died for this trend! Back areas of flea markets are not meant for orthodontic procedures!! Not to mention, who ever said braces were cool?! Check out the original article HERE.
I’m a reading machine!
Feb 2nd
I have been reading through novels faster than usual lately. Here are a few I’ve finished, started or have yet to read that are worth picking up!
“Fallen” by Lauren Kate – Similar to Twilight with forbidden love. But I love Daniel Grigori so much more than Edward Cullen and I think the plot is much more exciting! The sequel novel, “Torment” will be available Autumn 2010. I can’t wait!
“The Immortals Series” by Alyson Noel – Ever has lots of extraordinary talents like seeing auras. The plot is complex and fantastic. Evermore is Book 1.
“The House of Night Series” by P.C & Kristin Cast – I’ve devoured these novels in one sitting at a time. In the new world if you are marked by a tracker you are forced to go through schooling at The House of Night. There is a pretty long series available which makes me so excited and leaves me still craving for more. Marked is Book 1.
I Looove This Book!! : Fallen by Lauren Kate
Jan 28th
I just wanted to quickly proclaim by love for the novel “Fallen” by Lauren Kate (follow her on twitter @LaurenKateBooks). I am aching for “Torment” to come out this Autumn. The story is intense and heartfelt. Those of you that read Twilight and loved it, will love this novel a hundred times more!! I have a copy if anyone wants to borrow it
I can’t believe I’m going to say this but:
Daniel Grigori > Edward Cullen
Do Not Eat Here! Nance’s Restaurant, Murrells Inlet SC
Jan 27th

My relatives came into town and with them visiting from up North, they requested that we venture to a seafood restaurant. I recommended any of the restaurants along the marsh walk in Murrells Inlet. My grandfather ended up choosing Nance’s over the numerous other choice and I am so unhappy that he did; as are the rest of my family.
Nance’s Restaurant is nice enough looking from the outside. The parking lot is a bit hazardous without any distinctive parking spots, but luckily for us we are currently in the slow season of the year, so we could park wherever we wanted. As soon as we entered the restaurant I was disappointed in the atmosphere. There was a strong fish odor in the air (to be expected somewhat, but it was more of a sour scent), the lights were very dim and everything looked very old fashioned and in need of a renovation.
We were seated at a back table next to a large area with no lights at all. It made it very difficult for us to read the menu. The menu itself is very limited, especially if you have family members that do not enjoy fish. The prices range from approx. $10 for hamburger to $40 for a seafood mix of oysters, clams, shrimp, etc. Our table of 7 ordered an array of wings, oysters, clams, hamburgers, scallops, fish and steak; we essentially tried everything on the menu. The complimentary hush puppies were very tasty, however they do not provide you with any plates to eat them on! Not to mention, although you are paying upwards of $20 per person to eat there, the restaurant does not provide you with fabric napkins. In fact, they don’t provide you with napkins at all but rather loose rolls of paper towels scattered on the table. In addition to not providing plates or napkins, there are holes in the tables that are set to hold buckets for oyster shells; we never had buckets put into place for us until we had finished eating the oysters! Our waitress Stephanie A. was friendly enough I suppose, however we didn’t appreciate her casual tossing of silverware in our direction when she approached our table; there were knives in those little paper wrapped pockets!
The oysters were pretty good quality and got the job done, however our other appetizer of hot wings were terrible. The wings had little to no flavor and were cold in the center. They had a horrible texture as if they had been sitting in a freezer for far too long. Each one of our party members received their meals at separate times and it was a good five minutes before I was able to begin enjoying my food with the rest of the family. The New York Strip that my sister ordered was cold and I quote “tasted as if it had been dropped in a barrel of soot and charcoal”. My mother ordered scallops which were ice cold in the center and she had to send the dish back to the kitchen to finish sauteing them. She received her new hot scallops a few minutes later, however they had simply been microwaved! A few of our orders had been wrong (example: we ordered baked potatoes and received french fries. This isn’t a big deal, but its just the fact that they got the orders WRONG). The hamburgers were extremely small, overcooked and bland. My father specifically asked the waitress if his burger could be cooked “rare” and she said that it was against the law in SC; which after a little research on my iPhone, I’ve found that this law hasn’t been in effect years. I thought it was interesting how we were able to consume as many raw oysters as we requested, even though one in however many is fatal, but we couldn’t have our burgers cooked medium rare. Our person conclusion? Based on taste, texture and temperature, the burgers are precooked and pattied and therefore cannot be cooked to order. In addition to our uncooperative waitress, we had a clear view of the food preparation area, which luckily for us we had just finished eating, when we witnessed an employee wipe his nose and start arranging a customer’s food on a plate. Its extremely unsanitary and uncalled for!!!
In regards to the senior discount that is offered at most if not ALL restaurants in the area, Nance’s has found a way to almost get out of it. It specifically says in the menu (which I’m glad they pointed out) that you will only be offered the discount on the cost of your entree rather than the entire bill like at most other restaurants. I understand that it was pointed out in the menu, but that doesn’t mean that it is right. I can think of plenty of other restaurants that aren’t classified as “fine dining” that offer greater benefits than that as well as a much better experience!
Our bill came to be about $200 which wouldn’t have been too bad if we had enjoyed our meal. I’ve been to most of the restaurants along the marsh walk in Murrells Inlet and this by far is the worst restaurant I’ve been to! There were 7 of us in the party so of course we got stuck with the 18% gratuity rate which upset us all because our service and food was especially horrible. I wanted to make a few comments prior to paying the bill, but my relatives tried to be polite and I decided that I was going to use technology to my advantage when I returned home. The dinner at Nance’s restaurant ruined the experience with my family tonight because we were all so focused on how horrible of a time we were having. I have every intention of posting this review not only on my blog, but on google review, twitter and any other location that will allow it. I am also planning on sending a copy of this to the owner of the restaurant in hopes that he/she can correct the flaws and keep his customers happy year round. I will never recommend this restaurant to any local or visitor alike and I will NEVER return to try the food again.

Seaside Orthopedics – Ocean Isle, NC
Jan 6th
If you ever have to visit an Orthopedic Doctor, I recommend that you stay as far away from Seaside Orthopedics as possible. They have an office in Ocean Isle, NC and North Myrtle Beach, SC.
So here’s the back story:
Yesterday, we went outside to simply move the horses into another pasture around feeding time. Somehow, our biggest horse Oscar, got excited and kicked backwards. My Mom was standing just close enough that his feet clipped her arm. I took her to the hospital and she has a fracture in her arm (ulna to be exact). They created a make shift cast and sent us on our way with a referral to see Dr. Young, an orthopedic specialist.
So today began:
I called Dr. Young’s office at about 9:00 a.m. and told them I needed to make an appointment for my mother to get a cast for her arm. They asked if we could get there by 10:45 a.m. and they could squeeze her in. I thought that was fantastic and that we could get her taken care of today instead of sometime next week. Little did I know that their office was in Ocean Isle, NC so I had a 40 minute drive to get to their office (even though they have an office in North Myrtle!).
